A lot of people don’t think much about their furnace until something goes wrong with it. However, it’s a good idea to do what you can to maintain it. With that said, here are a few tips on how to maintain your furnace.
1. Change The Filter- One of the best things you can do for your furnace is changing its filter. Try to inspect the filter regularly and make sure it isn’t clogged with debris, dirt and dust. If there is any, then this may restrict airflow, which results in your furnace having to work harder than it has to. Not only that, but it won’t run as efficient as it should.
Ideally, you should change the filter once a month. However, if you use a really good filter, then you might only have to change it every 12 weeks. Changing the filter to a furnace is easy, so you should have any problems doing it yourself.
2. Clean Access Areas- Another thing you want to do is take a look inside the access panels. Open all of the panels to the unit and if you notice there is dirt and debris, then get rid of it. Also, use a wet/dry vacuum to suck out debris around the blower. Afterwards, use a damp cloth to wipe everything down.
While you’re looking inside the access panels and checking out the blower, you should inspect the wires. If there is any corrosion or loose connections, then contact a professional. They will be able to replace the wires and fix any bad connections.

3. Inspect The Flue Pipe- The large pipe that leads away from the furnace is the flue pipe, which is where chemicals and smoke is carried out. You want to take a look at the pipe and check for holes. If there is a large hole present, then contact a professional, but small holes can be patched up. Foil tape should do the trick, but make sure you use quality tape.
4. Inspect The Ducts– Ducts play an important role because they carry the heat and deliver it to different areas of your home. If there is a hole in one of the ducts, then you could end up using more heat than necessary, which means you’ll spend more money on heating. It’s a good idea to patch holes up with foil tape, but only if they are small. If you’re able to do so, you should vacuum your ducts, but if you’re not confident or you don’t know how to do it, then you should contact a professional duct cleaning company, as they have the expertise and equipment to get the job done.
When it comes to maintaining your furnace, there are many things you can do. However, the above things are some of the most effective, and they are relatively easy to do. If you want to maintain your furnace and get the most from it, then make sure you implement the tips and advice you’ve just learnt about.
