The Texas State Aquarium is home to more than 500 species of aquatic animals. Its mission is to support wildlife conservation while simultaneously engaging and inspiring the masses. Located at 2710 North Shoreline Boulevard near Downtown Corpus Christi, The Texas State Aquarium is a great pit stop for family vacations.
Not only is this aquarium the largest in the Lone Star State, but it is also one of the largest in the country. Its original name was Gulf Coast Zoological and Botanical Society. After one name change in 1978, the aquarium was given its current name in 1986. It was not until 1990 that the Texas State Aquarium opened up to the general public.
The Texas State Aquarium doubled in size in 2017 after opening up Caribbean Journey. A 400,000-gallon shark tank exhibit was part of the expansion. Other points of interest within the aquarium are the Coral Reef, Blue Hole, Dolphin Bay, and Eagle Pass. Islands of Steel, Hawn Wild Flight Theater, and Flower Gardens are three other popular exhibits. Additionally, if you stop by Living Shores, you can have fun checking out the interactive hermit crab exhibit.
The aquarium is home to quite a few programs, including Aquavision, summer and spring-break camps, outreach programs, and even overnight sleepovers. Are you familiar with the show “JAG?” The Texas State Aquarium was featured in the pilot episode.
Exploring the aquarium not only places you close to Downtown Corpus Christi, but you are also right nearby popular museums and the Convention Center Complex. Most visitors spend a couple of hours checking out the aquarium and everything it has to offer. Plan ahead for your visit and be sure to catch the Dolphin Show. If you are really up for an adventure, you can also book a private swim with the sharks.
Kids enjoy feeding the stingrays. You can also watch staff feed the sea turtles. There is a 4-D movie theater on-site as well, and don’t forget to stop by the water park with the kiddos. The facility is well-maintained, the staff is friendly, and the interactive exhibits are quite engaging.
Be sure to take advantage of photo opportunities, and you are going to want to say hello to the resident ocelots. A stop by the gift shop should round out your visit to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi TX. Enjoy checking out all the marine life and extras at the aquarium.
